On Being a Scientist and Having a Scientific Career

It is not uncommon for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and young scientists to wonder whether a scientific career is for them and whether a scientific career can be rewarding. It is much easier to ask someone to work hard and make sacrifices if students, post-docs, and young scientists can see hopes, a clear pathway, and milestones. With the rapid economic growth in China comes with unsettling fast pace of changes of game rules and professional landscape. However, for China having any hopes for becoming a scientific giant, we need to breed new generations of young scientists who are unlike the old generation. I would be happy to share my experience and advice at this salon and luncheon on being a scientist and having a scientific career.
